Caribbean Kigo Kukai

The Kukai - a haiku contest, where each person submits a haiku, and then, becomes a judge. When all the poems are compiled in a list, the contestants comment, vote, and give scores to poems of their choice. One cannot comment on, nor vote for one’s own poem. At the end of the voting process winners emerge, the selection based on votes by the kukai’s contestants.

Dear haiku friends you are invited to participate in The Caribbean Kigo Eight Kukai

The Kigo is lights

Send one haiku which includes lights to gillenacox@tstt.net.tt

Example:-

the trek through the streets

lights notched in bamboo beckon

on Divali night

--gillena cox

In Trinidad and Tobago, Divali is observed by the Hindu Community; tiny deyas are the traditional way of lighting the festival night, the deyas (hand made clay lamps) are placed in notches of the  bamboo  hand cut and stripped and designed into different shapes to hold the lights; Divali is a word from two others Deepa and Wali which mean rows and lights

From as early as the last week of September our radio stations start what is now secularly accepted as 'The One Hundred Days of Christmas' so that parang music and local Christmas songs are heard; It is not unusual or surprising to see Chrismas trees lights alongside deyas in store windows in October

On Divali night people of all religious creeds come out of their homes into the street to view the lights, some people commute from one district into another to see the lights; The festival attracts not only locals but also foreign visitors

How does summer vacation enter the everyday conversation of the average Trini, when in our part of the globe we do not experiences the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter? Well, the concept has its own definition for the Caribbean.  In T&T. ‘Summer vacation’ is the longest school break for the year, and it’s the fore runner to new beginnings for many.  Eleven to twelve year olds  would have received their results of SEA an entrance exam into secondary schools, they can now exhale, and go to camps, malls, or be packed off on overseas visits to friends and relatives where there are real summer climes; or,  play host to friends and relatives from abroad who come to vacation with them.
